Ваши слова о единстве математики, которыми вы завершили Ваш курс, запомнились нам на всю жизнь.

Вы постоянно даете нам пример высокой принципиальности, бескорыстного служения науке. Ваши свершения в конструктивной математике и математической логике — такие, как открытие возможности построения конструктивного функционального анализа, как впервые в мире осуществленные под Вашим руководством работы по автоматизации поиска логического вывода, как построения новых типов конструктивных логико-математических систем, - проложили новые пути в науке. Вашим ученикам и ученикам Ваших учеников принадлежат научные достижения мирового масштаба. Среди нас также есть Ваши ученики, продолжающие в меру своих сил, работы, столь успешно начатые Вами.

В этот день от всей души желаем Вам, дорогой Николай Александрович, крепкого здоровья, творческих сил и новых свершений на путях, проложенных Вами, многих радостей от успехов Ваших учеников и от процветания созданной Вами школы.

Happy 90th Birthday!! Although we have never met, during my years as a Ph.D. student under Michael Gelfond I have had the opportunity of learning much about you and, indirectly, *from* you. With deep respect I wish to thank you for all you have done for all of us, and hope to carry along your, and Michael's, teachings and heritage as honorably as I possibly can.

40 years ago, in 1969, when I became a student at the Petersburg University, I saw you for the first time at the meetings of the St. Petersburg Mathematical Society. There was not way I could have missed you, the person who was boldly asking questions about the computability of different results -- and boldly refused to be confronted with his own statements made a few years back, by citing your favorite quote that in 7 years, a person changes fully since all the molecules in a body change completely. I liked Professor Shanin, version of 1969, I sure as much liked all the following Shanins, of 1976, 1983, etc. In 2001, when I visited Russia for the first time after my emigration, I was pleasantly surprised to see the new Shanin who was active and energetic as ever. And I am looking forward to seeing many Shanins in the future.

Your energy and enthusiasm were one of the main reasons why I chose logic. At the seminars, you relentlessly asked questions, making sure that everyone understands -- a difficult art that we now all try to emulate in whatever faraway lands we ended up. The natives of these lands sometimes call it the Russian style, but to me, this has always been the style of Shanin.

I learned from you, I learned from others, I wrote papers about constructive mathematics, but I never fully converted to what you -- parodying the silliness of our communist leaders -- called the "only scientifically correct approach". However, every time I hear a mathematical result, a little (and sometimes not so little) Shanin stands up in my head, and asks how algorithmic is this statement. To me, it is the Shanin inside, to many others, this is natural. Mathematicians did not all become constructivists, this is true -- but on the other hand, most mathematicians have now learned to think constructively -- and many of them like to think constructively. Yes, efficient computability turned out to be often more complex than constructive mathematics originally thought -- it is not enough to have an algorithm, this algorithm must also be efficient. But computability is what many people care about. In this, your program succeeded way beyond the wildest dreams of a small group that started in the 1950s -- surrounded by aggressive non-believers in the science fiction concept called "computations".

Ваш юбилей это большое событие для научного сообщества и, в особенности, для Ваших близких, бесчисленных учеников, последователей, коллег, друзей.. Время бежит неумолимо и тем не менее трудно поверить, что Вам уже 90 (да и я только совсем немного отстаю от Вас).

Впервые мы встретились 55 лет тому назад. С тех пор с глубоким интересом следил за выдающимся творчеством созданной Вами математической школы. Встречи с Вами и с Вашими учениками всегда были радостными и вдохновляющими.

Запомнилась Ваша Комаровская даче в 1992, и тёплый, дружеский приём оказанный Вами и Людмилой Сергеевной мне и моей жене Берте. Эта встреча завершилась нашей с Вами, Николай Александрович, прелестной велопрогулкой по Комаровскому лесу.

С тех пор мы больше не виделись но, как и во все предыдущие Ваши дни рождения, постараюсь дозвониться до Вас (у меня имеются городской и дачный телефоны). Хочу услышать Ваш голос да и вслух поздравить Вас с юбилеем и высказать Вам и Людмиле Сергеевне наилучшие пожелания здоровья и всякого благополучия.
