PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Metro: You should buy a token to go by metro. One costs 8 roubles. One token allows you to make one journey with unlimited number of changes and unlimited time. Please, don't do any video recoding or photographing in the metro. It's a good idea to stick to the right side of the moving stairway -- those in a hurry come rushing down the left side (by the way, running is prohibited). The doors are automatic, so watch out not to get your clothes stuck or you may well miss your station! :) You can also by magnetic card for several trips, these cards are to be inserted with the black stripe upwards.
Municipal transport: In municipal buses (numbers without letters T or K), trams and trolley-buses you should pay to a ticket-collector (he/she will most often wear a red arm-band which has nothing to do with communism). One ticket costs 7 roubles. NB: You don't need to punch the ticket. NB: This transport has only regular stops and you can not get out whereever you want, so please, don't try to find a stop-button or pull the emergency brake. NB: It doesn't matter which door you use to come in or out.
Commercial transport: In commercial buses (marked by letters T or K) you should also pay to a ticket-collector, while in minibuses you pay to a driver when you enter. At some (bigger) buses you pay to the driver when you exit. The price depends on the line. There is always a label with the price on it (most often 12 or 14 roubles). NB: You can ask the driver to stop this transport whereever you want, but do it in advance.
Taxis: it's always expensive; if you feel somewhat strange about the car, don't use it! always ask the price before you get in (if it's more than $10 - don't use it!) Please, be very careful on the roads -- many Russian drivers like high speeds but dislike the rules.

PHONE CALLS

There are many phones in the streets and especially near metro stations. There are several types of these. You can pay either by metro tokens, or coins, or phone cards of different companies (this depends on the phone). You can buy phone cards at metro stations. NB: To make an international call from mobil phone: dial + followed by country code or 8- wait for tone - 10 but not 00 as in other countries.

THEATRE

A good idea to wear something like an evening dress and not to be late --- the show will begin on time. Please, don't forget to switch off your mobile phones (you will probably be reminded of this).

THE MOST IMPORTANT DONT's

Please, do not drink unboiled water
do not buy anything (especially alcohol) in the street
do not exchange currency by private dealers
