Algebra

Bio excerpt

My work in algebra was done in St.-Petersburg State University under the supervision of Dr. Nikolai Alexandrovich Vavilov and dealt with structure theorems for algebraic groups. Dr. Vavilov together with M. Gavrilovich developed a nice way to prove the structure theorems (proudly yet deservedly named «The proof from the Book») which they applied to groups of type E6 and E7. I was able to extend the result to groups of type F4, and Dr. Vavilov later noted that the very same reasoning would also apply to 2E6. The results for F4 required discretion between long and short roots in that root system and laborous calculations, and there does not seem to be any room for improvement in this case. My M. Sc. thesis consisted of the proof for F4.
